Nineteenth century sewing books can be enlightening, fascinating, and sometimes frustrating. The authors probably never imagined that anyone would be reading their work a century or two later. They wrote for their contemporaries, and, of course, used words and phrases they knew would be understood by their readers. This can make interpreting their meaning a challenge to us today. And even more of a challenge, some authors were probably obscure to readers in their own day!

Still, for those of us with a passion for history, the effort is worth it. We hope you will enjoy viewing this eclectic collection of nineteenth century sewing instruction.

Please note that the peculiar and inconsistent formatting is not entirely due to the webmaster's whim ~ most has been transcribed directly from the originals.
