Learn
the basic stitches used in plain sewing, examine a treasure
trove of original garments, period sewing instruction books
and samples from c.1815 - 1915.
Workshop
teacher Melissa Roberts has been studying plain sewing instruction
for many years, tracing its history beginning with the plan
originated by an English schoolmistress in 1810, through improvements
by "Irish nuns" in 1815, adaptations for Baltimore
schoolgirls in 1818, with variations by French dressmakers
in mid-century, back and forth across the Atlantic, culminating
in the carefully executed system and models of Columbia Teacher's
College, NY, in 1900.
Participants
re-create sample books similar to originals by learning how
to work the most common stitches using period style calicos,
wool flannel, buttons, waxers, etc., and then pin their completed
specimens in their books for a take-home project with authentic
flavor - right down to the rewards of merit based on a 19th
century original.
Full-day
workshop or hour-long presentations; non-profit organizations
may be eligible for special programs.
